Renewal Day By Day

My granddaughter recently came in the house sat abruptly, and one look at her face “said it all.” “What’s up?” I asked her and as she finally looked up at me with tears in her eyes, stated, “I’m not playing out there anymore.” “Okay,” I responded and just waited. It just took a few more seconds when she dramatically stands, and with emphasis retorts, “Your grandson is always changing the rules when we play. He doesn’t like to go by mine and I’m supposed to just go by his. It’s not fair! He’s always changing everything and doesn’t listen!”
I looked at her and responded, “well, then you need to learn how to become a change agent.” As I offered her something cool to drink, she asks, “what’s a change agent?” I thought about my answer for a while and as simply as I could explained, “a change agent is someone who knows how to connect with other kids to play together, share together, learn together and share the rules. Change agents try to bring peace and cooperation. And,” I added, “change agents renew their hearts every day. I asked her, “do you know that Jesus was the greatest change agent and set the example for us?”
As she sipped on her drink she became very thoughtful and didn’t say anything. She finished her drink and went out. It wasn’t until later in the evening that she mentioned she was going to try to be a “change agent like Jesus, maybe not like he was but” she looks at me, “close.” I thought to myself, “I need to work on this as well.” I realized that as I spoke to her I was speaking to myself. “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16
