Crush Your Doubts…

Merriam Webster describes human nature “the distinguishing characteristics—including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting—which humans tend to have naturally.”  It’s a pretty general definition and I understand that cultures and the way we were brought up can also affect our personal nature.  The continual “nature versus nurture” debate is a well-known “modern discussion” about human nature in the natural sciences.  In reading the 6th chapter of Judges, I try to understand the human nature of Gideon and its affect on his spiritual nature.

Even after God had told him that he would be with him in the task at hand, Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.”  I stopped to reflect on this and thought, is he truly incredulous?  My natural instinct was to immediately judge and make issue of his skepticism.  However, I stopped to consider and asked, “Seriously, how often do I do this, myself?”  The answer?  “Perhaps, more times than not.”  My natural way of “thinking” is to question my spiritual thought processes.  Is it really God, speaking and tugging at my heart?  Or, is it just a feeling that will pass?

I kept thinking about this and reversed the “remote” of my mind and reviewed situations in my life where God ALWAYS came through; even when I “doubted.”  I realized when pressed with the natural instinctive human characteristic of doubt; I go to the Word of God.  I begin to remember and focus on God’s promises.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:29 “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

William Shakespeare noted his well, “Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”  It is a true element to remember, my doubts work against me most of the time, and I must trust God to help me overcome this embedded human nature characteristic.  How about you?
