Did you know that studies have shown that whereas speaking raises blood pressure, attentive listening can bring it down? Active listening is the highest and most effective level of listening. It’s really a special communication skill.
And, for those that have mastered it know that it is also great strategy for having real and effective communication. This type of listening is based on complete attention to what a person is saying. It is actually listening carefully while showing interest and not interrupting. It’s mastery is quite frankly a lot of concentration on someone other than oneself.
The book of Matthew records a time where the Apostle Peter was speaking and a “bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold a voice out of the cloud said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to Him.’” This was God telling them to listen to Jesus. What a message to listen to. It terrified the disciples such that they fell face down on the ground.
After reading this in chapter 17 of Matthew and the 9th chapter of Mark and Luke, I began to mull over how many times in my life I have missed the mark for failure to listen attentively. “How many times have I failed to listen to the voice of God?” I ask myself this question.
“The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders. The Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer to calve, and strips the forest bare, and in His Temple everything says, ‘Glory!’” Psalm 29:3-9
This morning, I heard the voice of the Lord! I called out to Him because of what I carry in my heart and immediately I heard “Fiel siervo sigue, sigue adelante!” I have that old song in my heart! Don’t give up, my faithful servant, keep moving forward!
I then read, “fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
The Voice of the Lord is there; we must but LISTEN!
