Show and Tell

I used to like “Show and Tell” time at school. Initially, it was difficult to get up and present something I had to show and talk about. But, as I got up more often it became easier. I just gained more confidence with each presentation . The other day however, a guest in my home approached me and asked me for a bath towel. I was surprised because the towels were hanging in the guest bathroom. I noted that to her and she asked, “You mean those aren’t show and tell?” We both had a good laugh over that. And, it’s true, sometimes one goes to someone’s home and the towels are fastidiously placed and they look lovely and perfect. Such that, we aren’t certain whether to use them or not.
As I thought about this, I realized that as a child, I was sharing something else with the other children in my class because that something was a treasure for me and I wanted to share and tell them why. Then, it wasn’t because I wanted to flaunt or boast about a small treasure; I just wanted to share it and tell why it meant so much to me. My items were rocks, feathers, sometimes a leaf or two and once a special doll I had and birthday cards or even a letter I’d receive from my aunt who lived in West Berlin at that time; things that were not costly but meant so much to me.

I will admit I enjoyed the “ooo’s and aaa’s” the kids would express. It was fun sharing and telling and showing. It was a wonderful time of childhood innocence and learning.

I suppose today “show and tell” can be an idiom of brandishing to the extent of flashing and exhibiting. This is a worldly portrayal and one exhibited in the various aspects of media. As believers, we have to be conscientious and careful not to trip over that “trap.” I have learned this through my experiences and stumbling as I’ve lived my life in Christ.

I want to live the “Show and Tell” life that Jesus did while he lived on earth and exemplified for us. “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminals death on the cross.” Philippians 2: 5-8

Is it easy? Of course it isn’t! But, it is doable with the help of the Lord. We must “Show and Tell” others about the salvation He still offers and that we live. This is our purpose! This is our “Showcase” to show and tell others.

It isn’t about us, as the world would have it, but about the Lord; who offers us eternal benefits. Now, that’s real “Show and Tell!”
