“The heavens declare the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known,. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.” Psalm 19: 1-4
I sit here and read and reread this portion of scripture. I mull over it and can’t help but think about David who wrote it and how he must have meditated on God’s creation. As I contemplate this further I can’t help but think about my lacking and inadequacies before God.
God has revealed himself through nature in this Psalm. He is in control and as much as we’d like to plan great time and weather we can’t but guess if the good weather will hold out or not. Meteorologists have made great strides in predicting the weather and the usage of technology has enhanced it considerably. However, God remains in control of it because he alone created it.
Lately, we have seen not just in our nation but around the world catastrophic affliction of nature. I can’t help but ask, “Is God trying to tell us something?”
Have we become like Judah? In its history we find that it became a land of artificial and hollow religious worship. The prophet Joel warned the people of Judah of their fecklessness and superficial worship of God. I read a summary of Joel’s message; “calamities are God’s warning of judgment to come, heed these warnings, and return to God with all your heart, and when you return to God, God’s fullest blessings will be poured out on you and on all people.”
So I ask myself, ” is what I have within me enough worship?” The answer in truth and realistically is “no.” It will never be enough. The fact remains, that superficial worship and a heart divided can never satisfy God. God created us to relate with him, and as incredible as it may seem this infinite God wants a relationship with a finite me! The thought baffles me and humbles me when I really focus on it.
God’s artistry surrounds us. The heavens alone display his power, his love and his care for us. We should stop and look, really see the handiwork of God in nature and the heavens. And, then consistently thank him for it. They “proclaim” as the scripture notes ” the glory of God.” I believe we are just too busy sometimes to fully recognize it as such.
At night I am overwhelmed by the massive brightness of the stars. They have spoken to me, without a word; and their message is very clear and direct! God was, he still is and always will be there! Oh, I bless God and His Name and shout with glee that I know him in spirit and in truth and that he loves me so!
