In closing Chapter 8 of Ecclesiastes, Solomon wrote: “When I gave my heart to know wisdom and to seek the task which has been done on the earth, -people getting no sleep day or night-and I saw the work of God, I concluded that man cannot discover the work which has been done under the sun. Even though man should seek laboriously, he will not discover; and though the wise man should say, ‘I know,’ he cannot discover.”
Solomon realized that his knowledge and wisdom was pretty limited and incomparable to God. God’s knowledge and wisdom baffled Solomon. He was totally overwhelmed by it and he is not alone! We make God so difficult to know. People still question His existence, His power, His knowledge, His wisdom and the more people work and think through these various perplexities, the more we ought to realize that we are but mere nothingness before Him. We need sincere humility before God and less contending. We just need simple faith and trust in God.
Why make it so complex? Faith isn’t that at all. It doesn’t take years of education, or experience, or supernatural encounters, or a lot of wow factors. And, just because we don’t have all the answers to our questions and what God does or doesn’t do should not rob us of our joy and faith. It should not take away from our work in life because Someone greater is in control of it. We can place our trust in Him and believe that He will do what it is we need.
We don’t need to try and figure life out. We just need to humble ourselves before Him and submit our life to Him. In doing so, we release ourselves to Him and rejoice in how He directs us! That, in itself is an immense blessing!
