In the third chapter of Ecclesiastes verse 12, Solomon wrote, “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” The question came to me as I read this verse. What is it that makes me happy? I can ask you, the reader, the same question, “What makes you happy?”Each of us has a personal and diverse answer to this question. Happiness as a goal in life is honorable. As is to do good in life. I really believe most everyone wants happiness in life. We just need to be mindful that such pursuits are done in “the way we should go.” I believe that has been God’s intent for mankind from the very beginning!
He wants us to enjoy life. He’s the one who gives us the ability to delight, “rejoice and be glad in it!” He, alone gives us the wherewithal to remain so, regardless of our circumstances. This is where we can relish in true joy and happiness. Is it easy? Of course not, but when we keep that perspective in front; we will come out strengthened, and live happily daily.
We will realize when we have the appropriate sight of God and know it inside and out, that to be happy in life is savoring those gifts from God and not in what we accrue.
When we are happy we will “do good while we live.” Galatians 6:10 says, “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.”
I sit here and think again of the initial question, “What makes me happy?” And, as I reread this particular verse I realize I am most happy when I make every attempt to do good in life.
The example was set by the Lord Jesus Christ. He served. He didn’t own much, if anything. But, he certainly did good for others during his 33 years of life on this earth. He is an example to follow.
“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” John 12:26
This is an amazing promise! Of course, the Lord wants us to live happily! Just follow Him!
