Fire in my Bones

The prophets in the Old Testament had the task of relaying God’s Word and forthcoming judgement to the people, young and old, and to Kings, Priests and those with titles. Most of the time it wasn’t pleasant and they suffered much because they faithfully told what God had said.
Jeremiah was no exception. At one time, he was complaining to the Lord and told him, “O Lord you misled me, and I allowed myself to be misled. You are stronger than I am, and you overpowered me. Now I am mocked every day; everyone laughs at me. When I speak , the words burst out. ‘Violence and destruction!’ I shout. So these messages from the Lord have made me a household joke. But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak in his name his words burn in me like a fire. It’s like fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! And I can’t do it!”

Jeremiah was in despair but it was mixed with praise; “But the Lord stands beside me like a great warrior. Before him my persecutors will stumble. They cannot defeat me. They will fail and be thoroughly humiliated. Their dishonor will not be forgotten. Sing to the Lord! Praise to the Lord!”

Jeremiah unburdened his heart to God. We should do the same when we are scoffed at or even mocked for what we believe and how we live for God. Jeremiah faithfully relayed God’s word and quite frankly received nothing in return but persecution and sorrow.

When he tried to withhold God’s word for a while; he could not do it. He stated, “His word burns in my heart like a fire.” It became fire in his bones and he couldn’t withhold it any longer.

So we must remember what God has done for us. When we keep all that he has done in our heart and it becomes “fire in our bones” we will also feel the need to share it with others. And, whatever happens as a result of the sharing really won’t matter.

God is our refuge of safety and is there with us…always!
