His Glorious Presence

The scriptures describe Moses as “Now Moses was very humble–more humble than any other person on earth.” I suppose that’s one reason God trusted and loved him so. And, no matter what happens, God is fair and just. Moses never entered the promised land because God did not allow it due to his disobedience.
Again, the people of God rebelled against Moses. This time their complaint was there was no water to drink at the place where Moses brought them. These people literally harassed Moses and Aaron. Their outward rebellion and chastisement toward Moses was incredible. It was exasperating to say the least and wearing the patience of a very humble man.

Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernacle where they “fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord said to Moses,’You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water. You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock.'”

The scripture tells that Moses did as he was told. “He took the staff from the place where it was kept before the Lord. Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. ‘Listen, you rebels!’ He shouted. ‘Must we bring you water from this rock?’ Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.”

Moses was human after all, he was weary, stressed and worn out by these people and instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it which wasn’t what God had asked him to do.

The Lord told him, ” Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them.”

The Lord called it and as we know, Moses was not allowed to walk upon the promised land. His anger took the best of him.

I can so relate to Moses’ weariness from the responsibilities of leading the Israelites to their promised land. Their constant harassment and complaints are enough to create havoc within. We can only rely on God to help us in these situations. We cannot control what other people do, say or think for that matter but we can certainly control ourselves.

I want God to demonstrate his holiness around me. I do so want his ” glorious presence” surrounding me and hovering over me and embracing me with assurance of his love and appreciation. Oh, but we serve a mighty and loving God!
